24-28th September 2017
My husband and I have just returned from a 4 nights stay on the Isle of Mull. We stayed at Castle Cottage during that time – a very clean, warm, comfortable and well-equipped cottage spread across 2 levels, plus we were able to park our car right at the cottage door. On the day of arrival we met Maggie’s daughter who was very friendly and helpful (we didn’t get to meet Maggie – she’s a busy lady!). Wifi/mobile signal was excellent. The cottage is situated slightly off the beaten track along a twisty country lane, but it’s only half a mile from the main road, so it didn’t cause a problem at all as it just made the area around the cottage very peaceful. Aros Mains is in an ideal central position between Craignure and Tobermory, and a good base to get around the whole island. There are many single track roads in the area, but there are many passing places too, so never a big issue. We were also lucky in that the weather for 90% of the time was glorious so we got to see Mull at it’s best – stunning scenery. We would also like to thank Maggie and her family for their hospitality. We will highly recommend this accommodation to our friends and family.

I am usually quite critical having been involved in the catering /tourism industry for years but I cannot find fault with this particular package.

Care has been taken to ensure our comfort - warm, clean and welcoming accommodation and, best of all, a wonderfully balanced approach in making us feel at home - never intrusive yet attentive. This latter blend is an art!!

We shall return and recommend Aros Mains with great pleasure.

Tucked away just past Salen (and 15 minutes from Tobermory) on the coast Castle Steadings at Aros Mains is a true gem and not to be missed. We stayed in cottage 2 - sleeping 5 in 3 bedrooms - all to a simple but good standard. Great lounge dining kitchen area - nice wooden floor, flat screen TV for those (inevitable!) wet scottish days, ipod dock and ipod !! plus good selection of DVDs etc tucked away, and the deal clincher in the kitchen a dishwasher.

Great views of the sound of Mull towards Salen past the old castle. Otters on show at the right times just 5 minutes walk down the hill. Maggie and her family are wonderful and only too willing to be helpful - we can all endorse the quality of the home made scones.

The cottages location is perfect - 15 minutes to Tobermory, about the same to the Craignure ferry - significant stretches of which are the only bits of two way road on the Island - get used to passing places! Good restaurants in Salen (medeterrian) and Tobermoray (Cafe Fish), and also further away near Penmore by Dervaig (the Am Birlinn - definitely worth a visit).

I havent even started on the extensive wildlife - just to say on one day we saw 3 pairs of golden eagles !!!!

Enjoy your stay.

We just need to echo so much of what other reviewers have said. We (4 adults & 2 children) stayed in the Aros Mains Apartment for a week over the June half term and were thrilled to have found such a gem!

The apartment is spacious, well equipped and furnished beautifully for a holiday let. The views over the castle ruins and sea are gorgeous, although we also really enjoyed looking out the (back) kitchen window too at the chaffinches, greenfinches and siskins on the bird feeder!

Maggie IS a very friendly and helpful, yet unobtrusive host. The flowers in nearly every room and homemade scones halfway through the stay were lovely extra touches. The Wifi and digital TV were much appreciated, not least so we could watch the Queen's Jubilee Concert (and highlights of the soggy boat pageant)!

The location of the apartment is another huge plus - although it looks and feels like you're completely off the beaten track, you're actually only 2 mins off the main road to Craignure and Tobermory. Being close to the road and in the centre of the island means that everywhere is very accessible - no mean feat on an island with minimal numbers of roads, most of which are single track with passing places!

We loved staying here and hope to return sometime.

This was one of the best locations I have stayed in made all the better by being managed by one of the nicest people you will meet, Maggie made us feel so welcome that it was a sad day when we had to leave.

We stayed in the apartment that is very big - too big for us and we will look to book one of the smaller cottages on the same estate next year - this will be the first time we have been back to the same place and I think it will be the first visit of many - I have quite simply found just about the perfect holiday destination!!

Mull is superb for all sorts of reasons, wildlife, views and scenery, the friendly people, awesome weather to name a few. Salen is a beautiful part of Mull, quiet, scenery to die for and a couple of shops a pub and restaurant to keep you fed and watered.

Maggie's place felt like a home from home for 2 perfect weeks.

We stayed in the apartment and what a comfortable, clean, warm place it is. Far too big for just the two of us and the dog (will sleep up to 7) but extremely well equipped and managed by a wonderfully, welcoming, friendly owner. The views out over the Castle and the estuary are fabulous.

We thoroughly enjoyed staying here and would like to return at some time.

We took over the apartment for a week in April, for a family group of 6 (with 1 child). We were welcomed on arrival by Maggie, who also made us some amazing scones and left us a bottle of wine!

The views from the apartment are incredible - we saw seals from the window and a sea eagle flew over the car outside the house (one of many we saw on Mull) - there's also bird feeders just outside the windows so you can see plenty without going anywhere.

The apartment is very spacious (the single room is small but not cramped) and well equipped, including an iPod in the kitchen for us to use and a dvd player with some dvds and plenty of games, jigsaws and books. As it happened we didn't need any of them as the weather was very kind to us.

The location at Aros is excellent for exploring the island (we have been to the island before and it is much easier to get around if you stay in this area rather than up in Tobermory). Only slight issue was limited storage space in the middle bedroom, but this wouldn't stop us highly recommending Aros Mains and giving it 5 stars.

We'll certainly be back if we can!

What a delight this place is. We stayed in cottage 3, which has the living area upstairs, with stunning views over castle and across the bay. It has 2 bedrooms (one large double, and smaller twin), and 2 bathrooms. Living area spacious, clean, tv, washing machine, dishwasher, well, everything you can think of really, even an ipod and dock full of all kinds of music.

Maggie the owner very welcoming, and unobtrusive.

Down the path 2 minutes, and there is the most beautiful of walks along the beach road, with seals and otters if lucky.

We saw many eagles on our travels around this wonderful island, also red deer seals etc etc etc.

All in all, the most "chilled out" holiday we have EVER had, and cannot wait to go back.

Thank you Maggie, we will meet again!

We (my wife, her sister and me) stayed in Cottage 2 at Aros Mains in late May 2014. The cottage is down a rough track off the main road between Salen and Tobermory and is easy to reach and access. The location is convenient for all of north and central Mull and is about an hour from the ferry to Iona, the furthest point away on Mull.

The cottage is comfortable with two bedrooms on the ground floor and a large bedroom with ensuite in the roof. The kitchen is well equipped as is the living room with TV and DVD. The price is also very reasonable for the facilities.

There is easy access down to the beach with stunning views of the sound of Mull and wildlife. We didn't actually see an otter but wait long enough and they'll come. We also on the first evening had a stunning sunset light over the mountains on Mull to the west over Salen.

Maggie who owns and runs the cottage was very friendly and helpful in booking the cottage and arranging access. She also brought some lovely scones on our last day.

A great cottage in a great location.

We stayed at Cottage no. 3 at Aros Mains Steadings for a week at the beginning of October. This was our second visit and I'm booking for next year now. Very comfortable, with a great view of the ruined castle from the living accommodation which was upstairs to get the best of the views.

Maggie was great - and so were her scones!
